Project Updates for 10/4/2010

[img icd2_bb.jpg||right]I've been taking a break from working on my robot and have been trying to get my ICD2 clone working. Back on 2008-6-3 I built a version that wouldn't even show as a device on the computer. After a little troubleshooting, I found a couple board design errors and fixed them so that I was generating 2 voltage levels now. However it still wasn't being detected, so I went ahead and built a version on breadboard. For the SMT chip, I went ahead and designed and built a breakout board, which seems to have come out good this time and I soldered a couple leads onto an SMT crystal. I ended up only using 2 components out of the original circuit and both of them were just socketed chips, so I was able to just pop them out of their sockets. Anyways, at this point it actually is coming up as a device on the computer, however it comes up as USB device not recognized. I've triple-checked the connections to the FTDI FT232BL chip and those all come up as good. Fortunately, the rest of the circuit is breadboarded, so changing connections here and there is quite easy and doesn't require a soldering iron. If I can get this tool working, it will help me a lot with any PIC development. If I am still unable to get the USB portion of this circuit working, I still have the option of using a MAX232 chip. I would just prefer USB since my laptop doesn't have any serial ports (my desktop computer does though).
